School bus in-service

We found no state-level recurring in-service mandate for school bus drivers. Districts and employers may still require training. Initial certification requires a Department of Education & Early Development (DEED)-approved training course of at least 10 hours (4 AAC 27.220, program authority AS 14.07.020(a)(14)); the DMV then issues the S endorsement (5-year cycle with the license). Renewal requires a current physical examination but no refresher coursework; a new DEED training certificate is required only if the endorsement has been expired more than 2 years. Searched AS 28.15.046, 4 AAC 27.200-.235, and the Alaska DMV school bus endorsement page; found no state-mandated recurring in-service/refresher training requirement.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 5 years.

No general CDL continuing education; Alaska CDLs renew on a 5-year cycle. School bus drivers also need a state DPS and FBI background check for the S endorsement.

Hazmat: Standard federal TSA security threat assessment cycle (5 years) applies; Alaska DMV validates the H endorsement after TSA approval. No state-specific extra requirement identified.
