School bus in-service

REQUIRED 10 hours annual (each 12 months of certificate validity)

Citation: Cal. Educ. Code § 40085

California's Special Driver Certificate program is split across three agencies: CDE sets instruction standards and certifies instructors, CHP administers examinations, and DMV issues/cancels the certificate. Renewal applicants must complete at least 10 hours of original or renewal classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel, or in-service training during EACH 12 months of certificate validity; during the final 12 months before renewal the 10 hours must be classroom instruction covering current laws, defensive driving, accident prevention, emergency procedures, and passenger loading/unloading. Failure in any 12-month period is cause for DMV to cancel the certificate.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 5 years.

No general CDL continuing education beyond the 5-year CDL renewal; the school bus / SPAB in-service mandate is the notable recurring-training regime and one of the strictest in the country.

Hazmat: H endorsement requires the federal TSA security threat assessment (5-year cycle); DMV adds or renews the endorsement only after TSA clearance. No shorter state-specific cycle identified.

  • School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) certificate holders are covered by the same Educ. Code § 40085 10-hour annual training requirement
  • First aid examination requirements for schoolbus drivers under Cal. Veh. Code § 12522
  • Youth bus, farm labor vehicle, and GPPV certificates are related CHP/DMV special-certificate programs with their own training rules
