School bus in-service

REQUIRED 6 hours annual

Citation: 1 CCR 301-26-5.01(e)

Colorado Department of Education (CDE) rules for the operation of school transportation vehicles require each school bus operator to receive a minimum of six hours of in-service training annually (1 CCR 301-26-5.01(e); mirrored at 5.02(f) for small-capacity vehicle operators); a portion may occur during the school year. Districts must also review each operator's driving record and complete CDE medical information forms annually, and operators take a CDE-required written/inspection test prior to transporting students and annually thereafter.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 4 years.

No general CDL continuing-education requirement beyond renewal paperwork; Colorado CDLs are valid 4 years and CDL holders must keep a current medical examiner's certificate on file with the DMV.

Hazmat: H/X endorsement requires the federal TSA Security Threat Assessment (fingerprint-based, renewed every 5 years via TSA enrollment centers); no additional Colorado-specific fingerprinting quirk found.

  • Annual driving record review of each school transportation operator (1 CCR 301-26)
  • Annual CDE Vehicle Operators Medical Information form (1 CCR 301-26-5.02(c))
  • CDE certification cycles for school transportation annual inspectors and entry-level driver instructors (1 CCR 301-26 secs. 7.0-8.0)
