School bus in-service
REQUIRED 2 hours annual
Citation: 625 ILCS 5/6-106.1; 92 Ill. Adm. Code Part 1035 (School Bus Driver Permit)
Illinois requires a school bus driver permit issued by the Secretary of State and renewed annually. New drivers complete an initial 8-hour classroom safety/first-aid course; experienced drivers complete an annual 2-hour refresher course prescribed by the Illinois State Board of Education and delivered through Regional Offices of Education. Failure to complete the annual refresher cancels the permit; an annual physical examination is also required for renewal.
CDL & endorsements
CDL renewal cycle: every 4 years.
No general CDL continuing education beyond the 4-year renewal cycle.
Hazmat: Illinois requires both the hazmat knowledge test (30 questions, 80% pass) and a TSA security threat assessment at every 4-year CDL renewal for H/X endorsement holders; the Secretary of State advises starting the process 60 days before expiration.
- Annual school bus driver permit renewal (physical exam + refresher course + background checks)
