School bus in-service

REQUIRED 8 hours annual

Citation: 702 KAR 5:080 § 4(1)(b)

Administered by the Kentucky Department of Education through district-certified driver trainers. Initial qualification is a 21-hour training course (702 KAR 5:080 § 4(1)(a)); before the beginning of each school year every bus driver must complete a district-specific 8-hour update training aligned with the Kentucky School Bus Driver Trainer Manual, delivered after the final student attendance day and before the next school year opens.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 8 years.

No general CDL continuing education beyond renewal; Kentucky CDLs are valid for 8 years. Hazmat holders must retake the hazmat written and vision tests at CDL renewal unless the last test was within 2 years.

Hazmat: Fingerprint-based TSA Security Threat Assessment required every 5 years, tracked against the STA/TWIC expiration on the Kentucky driving record; holders are notified 60 days before expiration. Hazmat knowledge and vision retest at renewal unless taken within the past 2 years ($5 test fee).
