School bus in-service

REQUIRED 8 hours per 2 years (may be delivered as 4 hours annually)

Administered by the Louisiana Department of Education and conducted by each LEA. Initial qualification is the 44-hour pre-service phase (30 hours classroom instruction by a DOE-certified school bus operator instructor, 4 hours vehicle familiarization, 10 hours on-the-bus training); for continued certification all drivers — including substitute and activity drivers — must complete 8 hours of in-service training within a two-year period, which may be split into 4-hour annual sessions. Drivers certified within a year after pre-service are exempt from in-service that same school year unless the LEA requires it.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 6 years.

No general CDL continuing education beyond renewal; Louisiana CDLs renew on a 6-year cycle (per secondary sources; the OMV CDL renewal page does not state the term).

Hazmat: TSA Security Threat Assessment required for every hazmat issuance (new, renewal, transfer) and must have been completed within the most recent 6 months; hazmat knowledge test required at each renewal; fingerprinting through IBT costs $85.25.

• Bus attendants for students with special needs: pre-service and bi-annual in-service training considered per Bulletin 119 § 511 (LEA-determined selection criteria)
