School bus in-service

REQUIRED annual

Citation: Minn. Stat. § 171.321; Minn. R. ch. 7414

Employer-run under DPS oversight: districts, nonpublic schools, or private contractors 'shall provide in-service training annually to each school bus driver' and must annually certify to the Commissioner of Public Safety that each driver meets the statutory competencies, reporting the in-service hours completed. No universal hour floor is set; at least 8 hours of in-service in a year is the statutory alternative to being assessed for the competencies. DPS also runs a criminal background check on issuance and renewal of the school bus endorsement.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 4 years.

No general continuing education for ordinary CDL holders; Minnesota CDLs renew every 4 years. School-bus-specific requirements (annual employer certification, endorsement background check, physical qualification) are the exception.

Hazmat: Standard federal process: TSA Security Threat Assessment (fingerprint-based) on a 5-year cycle via TSA enrollment centers; no separate Minnesota-run fingerprint program identified.

• Annual license-record verification: districts must verify each driver's license with the National Driver Register or DPS at least once every 380 days
