The ND Department of Public Instruction requires all regular, substitute, and activity bus drivers to attend an annual 3-hour training workshop sponsored by the local school district or county superintendent's office (completion recorded on form SFN 52087 and reported in STARS PER02), plus a DD-4 defensive driving workshop every five years, with new drivers attending within one year of employment (guide cites N.D.C.C. 15.1-07-20). No exam is attached to the annual workshop; drivers also need a biennial physical.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 6 years.

No general CDL continuing-education requirement beyond renewal. ND CDLs expire on the same cycle as operator's licenses (N.D.C.C. 39-06.2-09 referencing 39-06-19), a roughly 6-year birthday-anchored cycle (shorter at age 78+).

Hazmat: Standard federal TSA Security Threat Assessment (fingerprint-based, 5-year cycle) applies for the H endorsement; no state-specific shorter cycle found.

• DD-4 defensive driving workshop every 5 years (new drivers within first year of employment)
• Drivers of 10-15 passenger non-CDL school buses must meet CDL physical/medical standards and complete any annual training required by the Superintendent of Public Instruction
