School bus in-service

REQUIRED 4 hours annual

Citation: Ohio Admin. Code 3301-83-10 (effective 7/1/2025)

Rule text: 'School bus drivers and aides will participate in a minimum of four hours of training' annually; the employing board of education offers the in-service (one or multiple sessions) based on a needs assessment covering defensive driving, pupil management, emergency procedures, and motor vehicle law, and may accept equivalent training from other sources. The rule is set by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (pupil transportation rules, OAC ch. 3301-83). Pre-service for new drivers is a minimum 12 hours on-the-bus plus 15 hours classroom; certificate renewal includes a driving performance (skills) evaluation with up to four attempts.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 8 years.

No general CDL continuing-education requirement beyond renewal. Ohio BMV issues CDLs for a 4-year or 8-year term (8-year option not available to older drivers).

Hazmat: Standard federal TSA Security Threat Assessment (fingerprint-based, 5-year cycle) applies for the H endorsement; no state-specific shorter cycle found.

• Drivers of non-bus pupil transportation vehicles (vans) are also covered by the OAC 3301-83 training rules
